Cleansers can often seem like a very simple part of a skincare routine, but can actually be quite tricky. There are different types of cleanser which may be used for different things and may not work for you depending on your skin type.
For example:
- Balms and oils can be great to dissolve makeup, spf and dirt. Despite the texture, they tend to work for all skin types. But used alone, they may clog your pores, so ideally use a separate cleanser after which will really clean the underneath layers of your skin (see my post on double cleansing for more info on that).
- Foam and gel cleansers can help to give that squeaky clean feeling. Normally more ideal for oily and congested skin as they help to remove excess oil and deep clean.
- Creams and milks generally have lots of lovely hydrating ingredients and can cleanse your skin without stripping its natural oils. Hence these are great for dry/ sensitive skin.
My personal favourite combo is a cleansing balm to remove makeup and a cleansing milk afterwards (and in the morning). However, this could be totally different depending on personal preference and skin type.
I recently tried this Pixi Hydrating Milky Cleanser as I was hoping it was a dupe for the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser which I had enjoyed as an in-shower product. Glossier isn’t as readily available other brands due to it being sold solely online and hence I hoped this would be a suitable dupe.
The product claims to ‘effectively purify whilst conditioning the complexion’. It has coconut, probiotics and willow bark, all to help clean your skin whilst nourishing and moisturising. It says it’s suitable for all skin types, including dry skin.
Sadly, I am not a big fan of this product. The initial experience was good, it comes out of the tube as a white gel with a pearlescent finish. When mixed with water it foamed up slightly and glided over my skin smoothly. However, when I went to wash it off it left a really sticky, tacky residue on my face which only really came off if I used a second cleanser. It left my skin feeling overly stripped, a far cry from the ‘clean but hydrated’ effect that had been promised.
Pixi as a brand has some great products. If you like to steer clear of fragrance then they are probably not for you but considering the price point and overall quality of the formulas, they are a good brand. Sadly, this one just wasn’t for me. Perhaps if you have oily skin it may work better but my advice would be to find something better.
Let me know if you need help finding your perfect cleanser- always happy to help. I am doing a dedicated post about some balm cleansers that I have been trying so keep your eyes peeled for that!
Lots of love,
Lily x
