Recently, in the space of beauty and personal care, natural deodorants have become super popular. Having done some research, this tends to be due to the fact that they are formulated without aluminium. In the past aluminium has been linked to types of cancer, however, in recent years these claims have been discredited. Generally, natural deodorants don’t block your pores and don’t prevent your body from sweating, so they allow ‘good’ bacteria to flourish so that you eventually become less smelly than before.
A key thing to note about natural deodorants is that aluminium is the ingredient that prevents sweating. So don’t expect them to leave you with super dry pits, hence if you are particularly sweaty they may not be for you. But they are generally better for you and the planet.
It can definitely be difficult to find a natural deodorant that you like as they can really vary in texture, unlike other deodorants that tend to feel the same. I recently bought the Native deodorant as I totally got sucked in by all the Instagram ads that I saw. Native is a cruelty free personal care brand that have a variety of products, from toothpaste, suncream, soap, and of course, deodorant.
The Native deodorants come in a variety of different scents and come in plastic or plastic free packaging. I decided to try the Coconut and Vanilla plastic free deodorant and the fragrance free one in the normal tube. The deodorants claim to be aluminium, paraben and talc free as well as cruelty free and vegan. Sounds good!
I decided to try the plastic free deodorant first. The scent of this is delish, it’s quite sweet and definitely took some getting used to under my arms but is certainly a lovely scent. The main thing I noticed about this deodorant is that I didn’t like the packaging. You have to manually push the product out which can get quite messy and difficult, especially as you get to the end of the tube (as you can see from the images!). This disappointed me as I was really hoping to like the more the sustainable option!
Generally, I kind of enjoyed the actual product. I didn’t notice any issues with smell, it applied nicely (although be careful to not apply too much) and it was nice getting a whiff of vanilla and coconut every so often. However, it does leave white marks on dark clothes which was a big draw back for me.
After finishing the plastic free one, I moved onto the other fragrance free one. This one is so much easier to use as the tube has a twist at the bottom which pushes the product out. All in all, I found the formula to be pretty much the same and I actually found myself missing the fragrance aspect of it.
Sadly, my final conclusion of the Native deodorants is that I won’t be buying them again. There are definitely positive aspects to them and I have seen others love them, but I’d like to continue my search instead.
In the past I have enjoyed the green people deodorants so let me know if you’d like to hear about those. And I recently bought a new deodorant product which I will be reviewing soon so keep your eyes peeled!
